I'm so flattered.

[Turning on his other heel to turn himself back around and face the same direction he's going, that's the step that makes his limp just a little more noticeable - and then he's walking properly, like he's caught on and is refusing to show just how much his leg will bother him from shenanigans. What an interesting teammate they've picked up. Oikawa assumes he's joining, there's not really even a thought that Kuroo wouldn't join the volleyball club here. They all have things they want to keep up on.

It's not much longer before the doors to the courtyard come up and Oikawa is leaning in the doorway, looking out; it's raining lightly, nothing more than a sprinkle at this point, so they could go out without getting downright drenched.]

[ Ah, he’s gotta be pretty full of himself if he takes that as a compliment.

But…maybe it is. Who knows? Semantics, man. In the grander scheme of things they’re as faint and inconsequential as the slight drizzle pattering their faces once they’ve stepped out into the courtyard.

Well, surely the setting is romantic enough. Kuroo wonders if he’s overdoing this, and inwardly shrugs. Doesn’t seem like it’s going to matter at this rate—they’ll play their little game until someone gets sick of it, or a volleyball gets socked into somebody’s face. Because of course he’s joining the team. He’s not leaving Karasuno in the hands of strangers.

Especially ones who can’t even corrupt them properly. ]

Give me another reason to flatter you, then. How did you guys gain Tsukishima’s respect, of all people?

[This is why you are the weird uncle, Kuro-chan.

Sticking his hand out into some of that rainwater and just lightly rinsing his fingers with it, Oikawa has to give a curious look at that sort of question, a cheeky smile spreading across his face before he pulls his hand back to shake the water off.]

I guess because even if we're certainly not from the same team, we're dependable and trying to keep everyone we know safe. Iwa-chan is a bit more reliable than me, and I'm just here to keep everyone from getting too depressed. Why, did he really have stories to regale you with about us?

[ It’s a shockingly honest reply, coming from someone Kuroo increasingly suspects is putting on an act for the benefit of others. Or for himself? Who knows? Maybe it’s the fact that the courtyard feels pleasantly less oppressive compared to the inside of the school that’s letting his guard down. Kuroo will never know, either way. ]

He gave me the basics. [ I.E. Karasuno’s win against their team, not to mention the loss of Iwaizumi’s hand and Oikawa’s supposed “death.” He remembers that little conversation he’d had with Yachi and he has to smile a little at that.

You can’t keep anyone safe from hell, you know. But apparently you can get them to at least smile. And Oikawa has a cute enough smile, all things considered. ]

He didn’t tell me my new captain would be kind of a frivolous idiot though.

[Is it better or worse that Kuroo's suspicions are completely true, and Oikawa is getting this mild feeling that he is being analyzed and eyed not for his looks, but his personality.]

Wah, is frivolous idiot your words or his? That's so mean, he's learning too quickly from Iwa-chan on how to berate me in ways that hurt my feeeelings.

[Which is a joke of itself, he's not really hurt by anything like that. Lightly puffing out his cheeks and making a little show out of being hurt, Oikawa turns his head to look back out into the courtyard and roll his sleeves up to take advantage of the rain after all - he might really be rinsing his hands now.]

Anyway, at least you're caught up to speed then on how surprising and super this school is turning out to be. I wouldn't expect Tsuki-chan to lay it on you as gently as he would a more skittish acquaintance. Feel free to ask any questions though, and I'll do what I can to answer with what I know. The bulletin board has a weekly poster though who makes a lot of notes, if you don't feel too lazy about reading it.

[ He wouldn’t be surprised either way, not after what he’s heard of this place. Everyone seems to be so cagey around him… ]

Don’t worry, it’s mine. Tsukishima’s a good kid. [ And apparently so is Oikawa, if he’s already washing his hands of trash this early in the game… ]

But even he can’t tell me everything, so… [ He’ll just…lean closer ever so casually… ]

Maybe I want to know more about you. [ What’re you gonna tell him, Tooru-chan? Do your worst. ]

[He can't wash his hands well enough in this rainwater to get the stench of trash off him so soon, we need some soap STAT. Flicking his eyes up to grace that inch taller cheshire smile with a wink, Oikawa doesn't move from the challenge Kuroo keeps presenting in the form of invading personal space. It doesn't bother him, so sorry to ruin the fun.]

But I was Aoba Jousai's captain and official setter, and I've been told I'm apparently a monster to play against. I think it's one of the better compliments I've gotten over the years. [Even if he doesn't necessarily agree; what's a beast to a mountain creeping up to crush him between another mountain that stands too tall ahead? He could only just scale the one, the other...]

[ That first one just about tells him all he needs to know. Damn, this guy’s a definite challenge, even if he’s already since lost to the Karasunos.

Kuroo decides that he probably shouldn’t underestimate the guy. ]

Another setter, huh? Guess you could say I’m a pretty big fan of those. [ But of course, he wouldn’t be able to stop himself from making comparisons between him and Kageyama later on. At least he didn’t go for Ushiwaka? ]

Are you really? I guess, since as a middle blocker, it's our job to trick you.

[Shaking his hands out again and then turning to face Kuroo better, Oikawa smiles even warmer when he steps in just this bit closer - and uses the front of his shirt to dry his hands by placing them on his chest like he's going to lean in.]

But you're going to have to learn how to hit a toss from Tobio-chan, he's our official setter here.

[And then he's moving away, dipping his much drier hands into his own pockets and leaning back into the doorway, lightly shifting his weight onto his (good) leg and hooking his foot around to set his toes on the floor behind his heel.]

[ My my. He does so wonder how this guy can fare against Kenma. But he’ll worry about that on the court, he guesses. Right now, he’s still trying to figure out Oikawa as a person, seeing as how that prior angle to provocation hadn’t worked out in the way he’d expected.

Not that that’s a bad thing or anything. But he can’t get a proper read on this guy, and that vexes him a little. ]

Yeah. [ His gaze lifts from those hands to meet Oikawa’s eyes once more. He’s not worried about poor little Tobio-chan, oh no. ]

When’s our next date?

[It really would be interesting, going up against Nekoma's setter. He's not nearly as flashy as handfuls of others he's met, he's the quiet type - perceptive, is what Oikawa would say after meeting. Where to break Nekoma's connection though, that would be the tricky part and certainly a challenge Oikawa would gladly take on. Unfortunately, neither will get to see each others true lineup unless they went home, so there's not much more to think on it than that.]

[Oikawa can keep playing along with these "dates" easily, Kuroo isn't giving him that much of a challenge at this point. If all it is are questions like these, he really is going to have to try harder.]
