Character Name: tooru oikawa
Canon: haikyuu!!
Canon Point: chapter 189
About:
A running joke with Oikawa is that he is nicknamed as "trashy" by one of his best friends - for a good reason. While he might be old enough to qualify as an adult and is generally mature, Oikawa displays a lot of childish antics as the lowest of his personality traits. He doesn't act out very often, but interacting with certain people absolutely bring out the worst in him - Oikawa can be extremely rash and impulsive, and he has a poor habit of holding grudges. People who generally haven't exactly asked for it, or have done anything worth the contempt he holds toward anyone who can best him, end up becoming unfortunate targets he wishes to crush. He gets highly aggressive about his grudges, and not only will he taunt them on top of doing his best to ruin their day, he will find their weaknesses and exploit them too well.
For all of his terribly childish reactions and actions against some people, Oikawa is highly perceptive of the people around him and how they behave. While yes, he will exploit an individual’s weakness if it is presented to him, part of why he’s considered "trashy" is that he really likes figuring out what makes a person tick; their motivations, what they are good at, and what they are definitely not good at. It’s information that he has no qualms using against them, or using what he learns for his own team. The benefit of Oikawa being on your side is that he won't exploit the weaknesses he finds - he will help a person play in the way they need to, drawing out their maximum potential. It's said by another power player in the series that Oikawa is the type of setter who increases the strength of an entire team tenfold, just by how he works their strengths and weaknesses.
It's even better if the opposing team has people he knows. While most people only meet each other briefly during play, Oikawa knows handfuls of players on other teams. He knows Kageyama has some poor tosses he starts defaulting to when he feels overwhelmed, so he purposely targets him and picks up the pace of the game until he can't keep up. He also recognizes which players are first years after watching the game for maybe ten minutes just by how well they receive - which is poorly - so he proceeds to target one of them to get ace serves off of to catch up with points. This is considered a dick move, but ball control like that is extremely hard to get. He will use everything he can to win. Even when the tables are turned and Oikawa has to figure out how to stop his opponent from consistently winning points, he can separate his personal emotions from what he is doing at that moment to remain calm and collected. He has to, in order to organize a plan for defense and to lead the offense.
A very core trait of Oikawa’s that he hides very well is that while he is very good at what he does, that he has worked himself to the bone to be the best there is, he is extremely insecure about being shown up. He was always a little insecure when he was a kid, but when Kageyama showed up with the first years while he was in his third year of middle school, it was there that he saw someone who picked up everything he worked so hard for with so much ease. It is definitely jealousy, but the thought of being left behind because he isn't needed anymore, that all his hard work will have gone to waste is his biggest issue. He's not someone to forget, not him, not his efforts, not anything he's ever done - so he works hard to be absolutely sure no one could possibly forget him. Oikawa does have a jealous streak a mile wide, and he would freely admit that Kageyama does have better tosses than him - he takes egotistical pride in saying he is better at serving, spiking, receiving and so on though, because even if he really dislikes genius type players, he can admit that they are amazing to see. It's not his jealousy that gets the best of him it's his insecurity in the end - the thing he really won't talk about.
Despite many personality flaws Oikawa is very good at what he does, and it is all thanks to honest hard work. He despises geniuses because they can clear what he's earned with blood, sweat and tears by just understanding in some way. It is probably the one thing that will instantly frustrate him about a person. He also isn't a completely terrible person - he's a normal kid who strives to be good at something he loves. Oikawa does have healthy levels of being competitive and when he's not near the two people he dislikes the most, he is genuinely friendly. He is an incredibly hard worker, and even when most people would say they've perfected something, Oikawa burns the extra hours into absolutely mastering what he can. He is smart, intelligent and cunning, and while it shows best with how he plays volleyball, it also ties back into how good he is at watching people and understanding them. He will spend hours watching videos of matches to see patterns, and to start coming up with strategies on how to handle particularly tricky instances. Seeing it and understanding what is happening on the other side of the net means he can figure out how to deal with it sooner than letting too many points go to the other team.
He's also surprisingly charming and well-mannered when it comes to anyone off court. He's good looking and popular enough to have a fan-club, and he has dated a few girls. Really, their only reasons for breaking up with him were because he was too involved in volleyball; not because he was mean or rude to them. Oikawa is very nice when it comes to girls in general, and it does actually hurt his feelings when they break up with him. He's not going to give up his sport if they ask though. Oikawa really does have feelings under all his bratty tendencies and he isn't as much of a jerk as he could be. He really does genuinely love playing volleyball with his team, and he treats every teammate as the individual they are. It isn't out of purely knowing how they work and wanting them to be at max power when they play, it's also because he honestly likes those particular teammates. He trusts them entirely, and they trust him just as much.
Inventory: UGLY HORN-RIMMED GLASSES, sweater vest with a stylish jacket and nice slacks, his phone and wallet, house key. only a handful of yen coins. an alien keychain. nothing useful!
Feature Type: golden eagle wings on his back! his eyesight gets to suffer (at least the glasses help... right... lol like an old prescription)
What are your plans with this character? I'm looking forward to Oikawa screaming about bird features, if only because the 'YOU SHOULD HAVE GONE TO SHIRATORIZAWA' joke applies. Also looking forward to having him mingle about and just make a lot of CR to get himself connected and well-informed about anything going on. It's part of knowing what's next to make a plan c:
